Alleged shooter is an 80-year-old resident of the senior living apartment complex
One person is dead and several other injured in a shooting Thursday afternoon at Smith Tower in downtown Vancouver.
The suspected shooter, an 80-year-old resident of the senior living building, has been contained in his apartment on the building’s 13th floor on the south side but is not yet in custody. Police have been communicating with him via phone.
At least three people were shot; one was killed and two patients have been transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, according to Vancouver Fire Department. Both are in satisfactory condition.
As of 3:50 p.m. the shooter remained in his apartment in the building. Residents of Smith Tower, 515 Washington St., have been evacuated.
Asked about whether police are worried about the gunman shooting out the windows, Vancouver Police Department Public Information Officer Kim Kapp said it was a concern. “This is an active shooter situation.”
A 12th floor resident, who was friends with the man who was killed, said police told residents to shelter in place initially. “They had their guns drawn,” she said. “They said, ‘Stay in your apartment.’” She was later evacuated from the building through the garage.
