British soccer star and D.C. United player Wayne Rooney was arrested for public intoxication by suburban Washington airport police last month.
Rooney, 33, was taken into custody by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police on Dec. 16, a spokesperson for the Loudoun County (Virginia) Sheriff’s Office told USA TODAY Sports. Rooney was booked into the Loudoun County jail before he was released on a recognizance bond.
Rooney paid the $25 fine along with court costs for the public swearing/intoxication on Friday, according to online court records.
Rooney played for Everton and Manchester United in the English Premier League before D.C. United acquired the striker in June. Rooney is the most accomplished active British player, playing on three World Cup teams with 53 goals in 119 games of international play.
“We are aware of news reports indicating that Wayne Rooney was arrested in December,” D.C. United said in a statement to WTOP. “We understand the media’s interest in this matter but believe this is a private matter for Wayne that D.C. United will handle internally.”
