The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a decision to make on their future at quarterback.
Just one day after Jameis Winston completed an inconsistent season in which he led the league with 5,109 yards but became the first player in NFL history to throw for at least 30 touchdowns (33) and at least 30 interceptions (30), coach Bruce Arians addressed the team’s evaluation of the passer, who has now completed the final year of his contract.
One question came up during Arians’ season-concluding news conference: can the Buccaneers win with a different quarterback other than Winston?
Arians, known for making witty remarks, had a pointed response.
“With another quarterback?” Arians said Monday, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “Oh yeah. If we can win with this one, we can definitely win with another one, too.”
The co comes just one day after Arians said “there’s so much good and so much outright terrible” about Winston’s play.
Winston just completed his fifth season in the NFL and has not been able to overcome turnover issues. He now has thrown 121 touchdown passes with 88 interceptions in his career, and his 111 total turnovers are the most of any player since he entered the league in 2015.
He also set an NFL record Sunday for most interceptions returned for a touchdown in a single season with seven. His pick-six in overtime against the Atlanta Falcons ended Tampa’s season in a 28-22 loss.
